Greek Yogurt – A Most Memorable Meal

Years ago, my husband and I took an epic vacation to France, Italy and Greece. It was my first time in Europe and let me just tell you that I ate my way through each country we visited! Not to mention that this trip was the reason we changed the focus of The Domestic Dietitian to a Mediterranean Diet website.

Aside from the greek salads and fresh calamari, one of my favorite foods while traveling in Greece was actually a simple breakfast dish. A bowl of deliciously creamy and tart greek yogurt, topped with fresh fruit and a drizzle of honey. 

Nothing fancy or complicated but one of the most memorable dishes on my trip.

                     A Simple Mediterranean Diet Breakfast

These Greek yogurt bowls make the perfect breakfast (or even afternoon snack) because they are simple and completely customizable, not to mention a healthy choice.

The creamy, tangy Greek yogurt is the base of this recipe. I prefer full fat Greek yogurt because I think it has a better consistency and flavor, which means I am more satisfied with less of it because it’s richer.

There are endless possibilities for creating a breakfast bowl with yogurt and fruit. Some of my favorites include –

Strawberry Banana Yogurt Bowl with Peanut Butter and Almonds

This is the bowl I choose when I’m hungry or need extra fuel after a workout. The recipe is simple:

  • Greek yogurt (plain)
  • Sliced Strawberries
  • Sliced Banana
  • Sliced almonds
  • Drizzle of peanut butter (or nut/seed butter of your choice)
  • Dash of cinnamon

Blackberry and Granola Yogurt Bowl

When blackberries are in season, this is a great use for those plump, delicious berries. I love pairing them with this KIND Peanut Butter Granola, but any kind of nut would work just as well.

I used pomegranate seeds when they are in season and I love the little crunch that they add! Plus they are a nutritional powerhouse!

Blueberry and Walnut Greek Yogurt Breakfast Bowl

Probably one of our most eaten flavor combinations. Simple but satisfying. Simply add fresh blueberries and handful of chopped walnuts to a bowl of Greek yogurt and dig in!

Pineapple & Coconut Chia Seed Bowl

A taste of the tropics, right at home! I actually prefer using frozen pineapple in this recipe because sometimes fresh pineapple is just too juicy that it thins out the yogurt.

Simply thaw a little bit of frozen pineapple and add on top of greek yogurt. Sprinkle on a little bit of shredded coconut flakes and then a little bit of chia seeds and pretend you on in the tropics!

Greek Yogurt with Raspberries & Pecans

Yet another fruit and nut variation…see what I mean when I say they are super customizable? Juicy raspberries and hearty pecans compliment each other so well in this recipe. If you prefer a little sweetness, consider a drizzle of honey to bring everything together.

My Tips for Making it at Home

  • Use seasonal fruit whenever possible
  • Plain Greek Yogurt lets the fruit shine without adding extra sweetness from flavored yogurt
  • A drizzle of honey is all you need
  • Add chopped almonds, pistachios, walnuts or pecans if you want a little extra crunch
  • A dash of cinnamon or sprinkle of chia seeds add a bit of extra warmth/spice
  • Frozen fruit works well too, just be sure to fully thaw before using
  • If you are using peanut butter (or nut/seed butter) place in microwave for 10 seconds to warm it up a little, it drizzles much better

  • 1 cup Greek Yogurt plain
  • 1/3 cup fresh fruit (or frozen fruit that’s been thawed)
  • 1 tsp honey
  • 1 tbsp chopped nuts
  1. Place the greek yogurt in a bowl, top with fruit, nuts and drizzle honey over the top
