I drink a smoothie just about every day, I’d like to think of myself as a smoothie superfan. I wasn’t always this way but now that I understand the benefits, I do my best to keep breakfast smoothies a part of my morning routine.

My favorite healthy smoothie recipes include this Triple Berry Smoothie, Detox Smoothie, Spinach Smoothie, Super Green Smoothie, Mango Smoothie, Mango Strawberry Smoothie, Blueberry Smoothie, and now this Blueberry Cherry Smoothie.

Reasons you’ll love this recipe

  • Packed with nutrition! Blueberries and cherries are loaded with fiber, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. They are great for digestion, skin, and inflammation. The chia seeds provide fiber, protein, and omega-3’s. This cherry blueberry smoothie is a nutrition powerhouse.
  • Cheap healthy breakfast recipe. Large bags of organic frozen fruit are affordable and make for an inexpensive nutritious breakfast.
  • Delicious. if you haven’t tried cherries and blueberries blended together yet, then you’re missing out.
  • You can hide all kinds of superfoods in smoothie. I use chia seeds in this smoothie recipe but you can blend in any of your favorite superfoods.

Ingredients

ingredients to make a vegan blueberry cherry smoothie

Frozen cherries – I prefer dark sweet cherries in smoothies. You can also use fresh cherries; make sure to remove the pits. I purchase large bags of organic frozen cherries at my local wholesale store (BJ’s wholesale).

If you come into a large number of cherries, then I recommend freezing cherries to use in smoothies and other recipes later.

Frozen blueberries – I also purchase large bags of frozen blueberries from my local wholesale store. Just like with the cherries, if you’re able to pick many blueberries when in season, you can freeze blueberries to use later.

Pro tip: If you use fresh cherries and blueberries in this recipe, blend in a cup of ice cubes to get that cold slushy consistency.

Banana – this adds sweetness and smooth consistency to the smoothie. If you don’t want bananas in your smoothie, leave it out; it will still be tasty, just not as sweet.

Chia seeds – this is my superfood of choice. You can find chia seeds in the natural food section or the baking section of the grocery store. This is another item that I can purchase in bulk at a great price from my local warehouse store.

Unsweetened coconut milk – You can use almond milk or any non-dairy milk.

Baby spinach – This is a great smoothie recipe to secretly add in spinach or kale because you don’t even notice it’s there.

Cooking Tips

  • Freeze leftover bananas – This smoothie recipe calls for only a ½ of a banana. You can freeze bananas to use in future smoothies or other recipes.
  • Check for pits – I can’t count the number of times I purchased “pitted cherries” only to end up with pieces of pits in my smoothie. I know it’s an extra step but check for any pits before adding them to the blender.
  • Use your favorite superfoods – As I said, chia seeds are my favorite superfood but you can use hemp hearts, flax seeds, coconut oil, matcha powder, or any of your favorite superfoods.

Supplies to Prepare a Smoothie

How to Make a Cherry Blueberry Smoothie

  • Add all of the ingredients into a high-speed blender and blend until smooth.
  • For a thicker smoothie or smoothie bowl use less liquid.
  • To thin out a smoothie blend in more coconut milk or water until you get the desired consistency.

How to Store the Recipe

You can blend this Cherry Blueberry Smoothie and store it in an airtight jar for up to two days. I recommend using a mason jar. Please give it a couple of shakes before drinking it. The consistency will be thinner than when you initially blended it, but it will still be tasty.

You can also assemble the smoothie ingredients into a freezer kit. Place all of the ingredients (except the liquid) into a freezer bag or container and freeze. When you want to drink the smoothie, place the ingredients into the blender, add the liquid, and blend. Check out my frozen smoothie packs tutorial for more information.
