I love to make my own sauces, dressings, and marinades. When I make them in my kitchen, I know what is in them. I don’t have to wonder, “Is this marinade keto-friendly?”

Unfortunately, lots of bottled marinades in the store will have something unhealthy in them.

Some are filled with added sugar while others are made with way too much salt. Then, some marinades have food coloring and preservatives in them.

Once you discover how easy it is to make your own marinade, you won’t go back to buying the bottled kind again!

💛  Why You’ll Love It

This is the best keto steak marinade recipe for marinating steak. It uses common pantry ingredients that you probably already have on hand. When you use things you already have, it saves you time and money.

I chose only the best ingredients that won’t overpower the delicious taste of the steak. The best marinade will enhance the cut of steak, not make it taste like sauce.

Not only is this recipe sugar-free, but it is relatively low in salt too. So whip up your own jar of homemade keto steak sauce – you’ll be so glad you did!

📋 Ingredients

There are two parts to this recipe – the liquids and the spices. I used basic steak marinade ingredients and already had all of them in my pantry. Here is a bit more information about what’s in this quick steak marinade.

Liquids

There are just four different liquids in this low-carb marinade.

I used soy sauce to give it a salty and umami flavor. If you need or want to remain completely gluten-free, use tamari or coconut aminos instead.

The oil is pretty important too. I use a third cup of olive oil in my keto steak marinade but avocado oil is a near-perfect replacement.

I used fresh lemon juice because it has a brighter taste, but jarred lemon juice will work just as well.

Finally, add a quarter cup of Worcestershire sauce. If you can’t find a keto-friendly sauce at the store, follow my low-carb Worcestershire sauce recipe and make your own!

Spices

Feel free to alter the spices to make the steak marinade taste how you want it to. I used very basic spices in this marinade – just garlic, onion powder, salt, and pepper.

I didn’t use a long list of spices because the soy sauce and Worcestershire sauce are so flavorful that I didn’t think it needed it.

💭 Tips

  • Make the marinade in a mason jar. This way, you can completely seal the jar and shake it up before you use it.
  • This recipe makes enough for one use. If you want to make extra for future use, store it in the refrigerator for up to a month.
  • In a pinch, you can use lime juice as a 1:1 replacement for lemon juice in this marinade.

🔪 Instructions

The instructions are pretty straightforward and easy to remember. Even so, please scroll to the bottom of this post to read the entire recipe in the printable recipe card.

Make The Marinade

Mix everything together in a bowl. If you are really busy, you can even add everything to a blender and let it do all the mixing for you.

Marinate Steak

Pour the marinade in a food storage container or bag and add steaks. Marinate the meat for at least an hour or as long as overnight.

For a properly marinated steak, the delicious flavor of the sauce needs to soak into the meat. Longer marinating times result in a more flavorful and tender steak but you shouldn’t let the steaks marinate for more than twelve hours.

🍽️ Serving Suggestions

There are a lot of other ways you can use this quick marinade other than just to marinate cuts of steak. It is also the perfect marinade for chicken or pork.

If you forget to marinate the meat in it, you can set a small bowl of it on the table and use it as a dipping sauce.

If you are looking for something to serve with your steak, I suggest making a delicious keto-friendly side dish like mushroom cauliflower rice risotto. It’s really easy and it’s vegan too.

Southern green beans with bacon are another very popular side dish to serve with steak. Instead of potatoes, add some roasted radishes.

Do you like french fries? Then replace them with some low-carb jicama fries.

There are so many keto-friendly sides that taste amazing with steak!

🙋 FAQS

Before I get to the recipe, here are some questions people often ask about this keto marinade. If you don’t see your question in this list, please leave it in the comments.

Does balsamic vinegar tenderize steak?

Yes, balsamic vinegar is known for its ability to break down the tissue in a steak and make it really tender. However, I didn’t use it in my keto steak marinade recipe.

Instead, the acid I used is found in the lemon juice and the Worcestershire sauce. Combined, they both do a fantastic job of tenderizing the meat.

If you want to use balsamic vinegar, I suggest using it in place of the lemon juice.

How long should I marinate the steak?

Try to marinate your steak for at least 30 minutes. It’s best to let it sit for about 8-12 hours because that gives the ingredients time to soak into the meat and make it more tender.

Be careful not to leave it in the marinade for too long. If you do, it might make the steak too tough, dry, or give it a funky texture.

That’s the opposite reaction you want from a good marinade.

Can I marinate meat at room temperature?

No, do not let your meat sit at room temperature while it marinates. If you do, bacteria might grow on the raw meat.

Always keep the meat in the refrigerator as it soaks in the marinade.

Should I season the meat before I place it in the homemade steak marinade?

No, do not salt or season your steak before you marinate it. If you do, it might draw too much moisture out of the steak and make it tougher than you want.
