Whether you’re home schooling the kids, working around the clock or just trying to get through a long winter, it seems we’re all more tired than ever before. They say the eyes are the window to the soul, and with good reason- if you’re feeling overtired, your eye area will give you away.

There are SO many factors that can lead to dark circles, and they aren’t necessarily a cosmetic issue. Dark circles can be a challenging beauty concern to contend with and a difficult area of the face to target, but by no means are they uncommon- and we’re here to help!

Read on to learn more about the factors that cause dark circles and how to alleviate them now.

What causes dark circles under eyes?

There are a number of factors that can contribute to the appearance of dark circles- and they aren’t all related to your lifestyle and sleeping patterns.

Certain genetic factors can exacerbate eye puffiness and dark circles. Your genetic predisposition to pigmentation, melanin disposition and collagen production can often mean the dark circles are hereditary.

Other causes, aside from poor sleeping habits, can include dehydration, allergies, skin ageing, excessive sun exposure and even diet or pregnancy related fluid retention.

In some cases, persistent dark circles may also be caused by more serious medical conditions such as anaemia.

How to get rid of dark circles under eyes

There are a few different ways to hide and even remove dark under eye circles.

– Eye cream
Not all eye creams are formulated with the same concerns in mind. While some are great for hydration and many work to erase the visible signs of ageing, we recommend using a specific, targeted eye cream formulated to lighten dark under eye circles and counteract puffiness for the best results.

– Concealer
More stubborn, or hereditary, dark under eye circles may not be entirely erased by a targeted eye cream, so invest in a great under eye concealer to help counteract redness and discolouration and deliver a brightening effect to make you look more well rested.
One of the best under eye concealers for dark circles and puffiness is the Lily Lolo Pressed Corrector in Lemon Drop, which contains hydrating Jojoba Oil, Sunflower Oil and Vitamin E to help keep skin nourished and really care for the under eye area, beyond just correcting its colour.

– Prevention
As always, prevention is better than a cure. To prevent dark circles from forming in the first place, always wear SPF and endeavour to hydrate your skin from the inside and out. Ways to do this include:
