Making Homemade Pumpkin Pie Spice Mix is not only tastier and cheaper than buying the store-bought stuff – it only takes 5 minutes, and you probably already have the 5 ingredients you need! Use this homemade pumpkin spice recipe for pies, cookies, oatmeal, lattes, or even chili.

I love using pumpkin pie spice mix in the fall, and if I’m being honest, year-round! But those tiny, overpriced jars of pumpkin pie spice you buy at the store are easy to go through quickly.

Making your own homemade pumpkin pie spice mix can save you money, and is also good for the environment (no tearing through all those tiny plastic containers!). And this pumpkin spice mix has 5 ingredients – all warm, aromatic, fragrant spices that are the perfect thing to elevate any fall-inspired recipe.

Ingredients in Pumpkin Pie Spice

  • Cinnamon
  • Ginger
  • Nutmeg
  • Allspice
  • Cloves

All of these spices should be ground, but you can grind them yourself if you prefer (see more about this below).

The allspice is a really fun addition that adds a ton of flavor. But if you don’t have any allspice, you can leave it out.

And I love all 5 of these spices in my pumpkin spice in the proportions in the recipe below, but you can adjust this recipe to suit your personal preference. For example, if you think the flavor of cloves can be overpowering, just take the amount down a notch.

Tips for how to get the best flavor

  • Use fresh spices – if you’re digging in the back of your pantry and find spices expired 3 years ago, those might not be the best to use. They likely aren’t spoiled, but as time goes on, the flavor potency of spices decreases. Use them if you don’t want to waste them, but know you might need a little more than a recipe calls for to get the right flavor.
  • Use fresh ground spices – for extra credit, freshly ground spices are PACKED with flavor. You can use a spice grinder or coffee grinder to grind cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, whole nutmeg, and allspice berries. I personally only ground up the fresh nutmeg for my batch- I used a microplane zester to do this.
  • Store in an airtight jar or container. This will help keep the flavors fresh.
  • Use within a year. As mentioned above, spices lose their flavor over time. If you use it past a year, you may want to measure more than a recipe calls for, or just make a new batch.

How to make and store it

Just mix everything together in a bowl using a spoon or a whisk, then transfer to an airtight jar or container!

This batch makes 7 tablespoons, which is the perfect amount to fit in a small, 4-oz. mason jar.

How to use pumpkin spice

There are plenty of recipes out there that call specifically for pumpkin spice. But you can use it in almost any situation that calls for warm spices.

For example, you can use it in place of cinnamon or nutmeg in many instances. It would be great in this spiced chicken and rice recipe or added to banana bread or muffins that call for cinnamon in the batter.

Use it in energy bites or even ice cream!

Or add a little bit to your coffee grounds before you brew– you’ll get a naturally flavored pumpkin spice coffee that’s perfect for crisp fall mornings.
