Getting a foothold in any industry can be difficult due to the high level of competition. When there are so many qualified applicants for the same position, a well-written résumé isn’t always enough. Or, because the job title doesn’t seem like something you would or could accomplish, you may decide not to apply to a position that would actually be ideal for you. This is why it is so important to thoroughly investigate the position. Prior to submitting your resume, spend some time researching the job to determine exactly what it entails. Your USP is your unique selling point. You need one if you want to set yourself apart from everyone else. If you can find one that fits well with the company you’re applying to and the job role in particular, your profile should be at the top of the pile. Your USP can be anything and could come from anywhere. Do you know a lot about or have experience with something exciting and new? What are your personal interests? Is there anything you’ve learned from them that you could use at work? Once you understand what your USP is, let potential employers know about it. 

Recruiters look at a lot of cover letters and resumes every day. Most of them are pretty standard, boring, and just tell you the facts. Put some of yourself into it to make it stand out and give yourself a better chance of getting an interview. Don’t be too sure of yourself, though, because that won’t get you very far. Instead, make sure your letter sounds like you and not like a template you downloaded from the internet. It will be very important and could be what persuades someone to take a chance on you.
