Everyone knows you can have any sugar when starting a low-carb diet… can you eat candy on the keto diet? Sugar-free candy that is.
Guess what? You can!
Well, you can when you make your own out of hazelnuts, sugar-free chocolate chips, and keto-friendly hazelnut spread. Even though there aren’t very many carbs in each truffle, they are so rich that you won’t want to indulge in more than a few at a time.
These little treats are the perfect after-dinner dessert, a treat at parties, or even a homemade gift. Even people who aren’t on the keto diet will be asking you for the recipe!
Keep reading and I’ll share the recipe, my best tips, and some serving ideas for these hazelnut chocolate balls.
Ingredients Needed For Hazelnut Chocolate Candy
This is a very simple recipe that only uses three ingredients. In fact, it is so easy that you might even have it memorized after making it one time.
ChocZero Sugar-Free Chocolate Chips
Use your favorite sugar-free chocolate chips – mine is from ChocZero! If you want them to have a richer taste, you could even use dark chocolate chips.
Just make sure that the ones you use are sugar-free.
Roasted Hazelnuts
You’ll need both whole and finely-chopped hazelnuts. To make it easier, I just bought a bunch of whole roasted hazelnuts and used a food processor to make my own chopped hazelnuts.
ChocZero Keto Hazelnut Spread
This spread tastes just like Nutella, except it is keto-friendly. If you are going to buy one, always look at the ingredients and the carbs. ChocZero makes a sugar-free spread that is perfectly keto-friendly.
Please note: Check out the recipe card at the bottom for a full list of ingredients used to make this low-carb recipe.
Quick Tips:
- If you have a cookie dough scoop, it can be used to form the balls and isn’t as messy as using your hands. The scoops would just have a flat bottom which they tend to have anyway when placing on the lined baking sheet.
- Do not forget to chill the chocolate balls at each step. This will help them become more solid so they form into candy balls.
How To Make Keto Hazelnut Chocolate Candy
This is a really simple recipe. It would be quicker, but you really do have to freeze the hazelnut spread and the chocolate balls at each step, or else they are really difficult to work with.
All of the instructions are in the printable recipe card at the bottom of this post. First, here is a quick overview, along with a few extra tips.
Freeze The Hazelnut Spread
This is very important because it makes the hazelnut spread easier to form into the balls. Freeze the entire container of hazelnut spread for 15-30 minutes. It is best if you freeze it for the entire 30 minutes.
Chop Up The Roasted Hazelnuts
You also need to chop up the hazelnuts. This is what becomes the crunchy coating in between the hazelnut spread layer and the chocolate layer.
If you don’t have a food processor, I suggest getting one. It makes this step so much faster!
Chill Chocolate Balls
Now you are ready to start making the balls. Take the frozen hazelnut spread out of the freezer and start creating the candy balls.
The hazelnut spread will start to melt as you do this. So, after you make the balls, place them on a silicone mat and put that on a baking sheet and then freeze them for another 15 minutes.
Add Hazelnuts
After the hazelnut balls are completely chilled. start to insert one hazelnut into each ball. Then, roll the balls into the chopped hazelnuts. Place them back in the freezer for another 15 minutes.
Dip Chocolate Balls Into Melted Chocolate Chips
Melt the chocolate chips. Then, dip the nut-covered hazelnut candy balls into the melted chocolate chips. When they are all completely covered in chocolate, place them back in the freezer so they can harden one last time.
That’s it! After they chill a bit they are ready to eat!
What To Serve With Hazelnut Chocolate Candy
I like to serve these at parties where I know there will be lots of sweets that aren’t keto-friendly. Then, I know I’ll have something safe for me to munch on. They are perfect with a hot cup of keto bulletproof coffee!
Sometimes when I make something sweet like these chocolate candies, I will crave something salty too. In those cases, I’ll munch on some keto parmesan crisps or salt and vinegar cucumber chips.

These are so simple to make, but if you have any questions at all, please leave them in the comments. Here are some questions that people often ask about making hazelnut chocolate balls.
