This Matcha Green Tea Smoothie Bowl features a plant-based, vegan, gluten-free blended smoothie of matcha tea, plant-based milk, chia seeds, and oranges, topped with cocoa nibs, berries, hemp seeds, and coconut. It’s super nutritious, plus packed with protein, healthy carbs and fats, and vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals. I love smoothie bowls, as they are a great way to pack in a cool, refreshing mini meal, post workout snack, satisfying pick me up, and after school nosh for kids (adults too!). The beauty is that smoothie bowls are thick enough that you can eat them with a spoon, and you can top those bowls with gorgeous, nutritious toppings!
I have been in love with green tea, really, ever since I traveled to Japan and tasted the real stuff. I mean I’m talking about tea that’s so green it is bright green in your cup and glass, unlike what you see here in the states. That’s why I’ve really been happy to see an interest in Matcha tea coming our way in the past few years. And it prompted me to find new ways to bring the flavor of green tea into my kitchen, such as in this recipe for Matcha Green Tea Smoothie Bowl. The flavor of this bowl is focused on the matcha green tea, so the mild flavor of oranges doesn’t detract from the blended combo. However, toppings can add more bright colors and flavors and textures to the experience, not to mention nutrients.
What is matcha tea? It is a Japanese-style green tea made from tea leaves, which are ground into a fine powder that you can dissolve into hot water or soymilk. This contrasts from most teas, in which the leaves are steeped in hot liquid and then removed. Matcha tea dates back over 900 years and has a long tradition in Zen Buddhism. The health benefits of green tea, such as heart health and cancer protection, are due to its high antioxidant content. Green tea contains significant amounts of catechins, an antioxidant in the flavonoid family.
Matcha tea is increasingly available in markets, so don’t be afraid to try it in a variety of recipes, including muffins, nice “cream”, and porridge. The sky is the limit! Start with this easy recipe, which lets the flavors of matcha tea shine right through. It’s a great breakfast, light lunch, or snack.
