Why Mangos Are Good in Salsa

Mangoes provide a sweet counterpoint to the chilies, raw onion, lime juice, and fresh herbs often found in salsa. The other ingredients tend to be spicy or strong in flavor, the mango balances the dish. Mangoes also bring a pleasing soft texture to the salsa which provides contrast.

Should I Put Avocados in Salsa?

This is a personal choice. Avocado works beautifully with the flavors of salsa and the luxe fattiness of the avocado balances the other sharp notes in the salsa.

Is Avocado Salsa the Same As Guacamole?

Similar, but avocado salsa is not guacamole. They have similar ingredients but the textures are different. Guacamole is often mashed so the avocados have a smoother texture. In salsa, you typically put chunks of avocado or pieces. Avocado is the definite star of guacamole. In salsa other ingredients like tomato or chili may be the dominant flavor.

A small dice of mango works beautifully in salsa. Try to cut the flesh of the mango into as uniform a dice as possible. The size of the dice can vary from 1/2 inch to a 2-inch square. If you like your salsa refined cut the fruit small. If you like a chunky salsa go for bigger squares. If you just like salsa, then cut the mango any which way!

How To Pick the Right Avocados for Mango Salsa

You want a ripe avocado. Choose a fruit that you can press easily with your finger. You do not want a mushy avocado or one that has big dents. I also prefer the ones with shinier skin if you can find one. In my assessment, they have the best texture.

  • 1/4 cup sweet onion diced
  • 1/4 cup jalapeño diced
  • 1 ripe avocado cut into a small dice
  • 1/2 cup cilantro chopped

How to pit a mango
A mango has an oblong pit in the center of the fruit. The best way to work with a mango is to use your knife to cut away a slab of flesh on either side of the pit. Hold your mango upright and point your knife down as you begin to cut the fruit. Imagine the pit in the middle and allow you knife to skim in front of it to release a slice of fruit, Place the mango fruit side up on a cutting board and mark a grid or checkerboard on the fruit without piercing your knife through the other side. Then spoon out the squares that you have created. Repeat with the slab of mango from the other side.
