As you can probably tell, we love smoothies! I make at least 1-2 a day depending on who wants one.
My favorites are green smoothies like this super green smoothie, detox smoothie, and spinach smoothie. My girls love fruit smoothies like this strawberry banana yogurt smoothie, triple berry smoothie, and strawberry pineapple smoothie.
So we don’t get bored with the same breakfast smoothies every day. I’m always blending up different combinations to try.
This strawberry mango smoothie has been on repeat in our house for months. It’s a refreshing smoothie that tastes like a creamsicle, which makes it very kid-friendly.
Smoothie FAQs
The only time you’ll need to add ice is if you’re using fresh fruit. Fresh fruit won’t blend into that cold slushy smoothie, like using frozen fruit will.
I recommend starting with ½ cup to 1-cup of ice cubes when making a single-serving smoothie.
Thick smoothies are a requirement in my house. So, all of the smoothies I share include ingredients that support a thick smoothie. Here are some tips and tricks that’ll help prevent your fruit from turning into juice.
1. Use frozen fruit – Fresh fruit is delicious but using frozen fruit is the best way to assure a cold, thick smoothie. If you have an abundance of fresh fruit, then freeze some (or all) of it to use for the smoothie.
2. Use fruits that blend into thick and creamy smoothies. Bananas and mangos are my favorite fruits for creating thick and creamy smoothies. They have less water content and a “meatier” texture.
Fruits like strawberries, blueberries, pineapple, and grapes have more water and create a slushy consistency.
3. Add Greek Yogurt – Not only is Greek yogurt a great way to thicken up a smoothie, but it also adds extra protein to keep you full longer.
Remember that Greek yogurt also adds extra sugar to a smoothie, so try to choose a low-sugar yogurt-like Siggi’s and don’t use more than a ½ cup.
To keep a smoothie vegan, I recommend selecting a non-dairy yogurt.
How to Make a Strawberry Mango Smoothie
The Ingredients
Frozen Strawberries – This is a classic smoothie ingredient! You can purchase large bags of organic frozen strawberries for a great price at wholesale stores and in many supermarkets.
Frozen Mango – Gives a bright tropical fruit flavor while also adding extra vitamin C and folate. Its meaty texture helps to blend a thick and creamy smoothie.
Vanilla Greek Yogurt – This adds protein and a delicious creamsicle flavor to this smoothie.
Unsweetened Coconut Milk – To keep with the tropical vibes, I went with unsweetened coconut milk. Almond milk, or any favorite milk, can be used. Using milk also adds to the creaminess of the smoothie.
Chia seeds – This superfood adds protein, fiber, and Omega-3’s to the smoothie.
Substitutions and Notes on Making This Smoothie
This strawberry mango smoothie is easy to adapt to make everyone happy.
You can use fresh fruit instead of frozen – To get the cold, thick consistency, makes sure to throw in ½ – 1 cup of ice cubes when using fresh fruit.
Use orange juice instead of coconut milk – Orange juice creates a bright, citrusy strawberry mango smoothie.
Blend in spinach, kale, or other greens – This adds extra fiber and other nutrients to your smoothie.
Use your favorite superfoods – It’s so easy to fill (and hide) superfoods into smoothies. Chia seeds, flax seeds, hemp hearts, and match are the ones I use most often, but any superfood can work.
Directions
- Place all of the ingredients into a high-speed blender.
- Blend until smoothie. If needed, add more coconut milk or water for a thinner consistency.
Make ahead and storage tips
To make ahead
This strawberry mango smoothie can be made 1-2 days in advance and store using glass mason jars in the fridge. The consistency will change, but the flavor will stay the same. It’s a feasible option if you want this smoothie ready to grab in the morning. Give it a couple of vigorous shakes before drinking the smoothie.
To freeze
There are two ways to freeze strawberry mango smoothies.
First, place all of the ingredients (minus the liquid) into a freezer bag or mason jar to create a freezer smoothie kit. In the morning, dump the ingredients into a high-speed blender, add the milk, and blend until smooth.
Second, fill silicone trays with the blended smoothie. The night before, add some cubes to a mason jar with a tightly fitting lid. In the morning, give it a few shakes or add it to the blender quickly. The consistency won’t be the same as a freshly blended smoothie, but it’s still a viable option when you want smoothies made ahead of time.
Other ways to enjoy this strawberry mango smoothie
- Blend it up on the thick side and make a smoothie bowl. This almond butter granola is delicious on top.
- Pour it into a Yeti and take this smoothie on the go.
- At your next summer party, make these smoothies and add some rum. Your friends will love it!
Supplies to Prepare a Smoothie
- High-speed blender – I’ve owned this Vitamix for close to 10 years, and it’s still going strong. If you plan to make smoothies regularly, I recommend investing in a high-quality blender. If a Vitamix is too pricey, then check out my recommendation for the best blenders for smoothies.
- Glass tumbler – I often use a 32-ounce mason jar for drinking smoothies. I also have this 18-ounce Ello glass tumbler.
- Reusable straws – These Ello reusable straws work fantastic for smoothies.
- Straw cleaner – Definitely grab a straw cleaner to keep those straws clean.
- 20-ounce Yeti tumbler – I love using my Yeti tumbler to keep smoothies cold on the go.
- Reusable silicone bags – These bags come in handy when putting together freezer smoothie kits.
