The ‘simple solution’ that changed the way Rebel Wilson worked out

Rebel Wilson details her ‘year of health’ for the latest instalment of Apple Fitness+’s ‘Time to Walk’ audio experience, and shares how she discovered that when it comes to fat loss, less is actually more. 

Rebel Wilson is a big believer in New Year resolutions.

The Australian actress, producer and comedian made a commitment, two year ago now, that 2020 was going to be her ‘Year of Health’- and since then Rebel has gone on to inspire her legion of fans world wide with her journey towards better health.

While her weight loss has made headlines the world over, what’s more impressive is that she’s actually stuck to her resolution. A feat no many of us can claim. And one of her biggest learnings when it comes to fat loss? All you need to do it walk. For her that meant one hour, every day.

This week, Rebel joins the ranks of some of the world’s most fascinating people – including Prince William, Dolly Parton and Naomi Campbell, by recording an episode of Apple Fitness+’s Time to Walk audio series.

During a 32 two minute walk, the Pitch Perfect star shares why walking was the surprise prescription she received from high-end health spa in Austria, and why it’s now an essential part of her mental health tool kit. She also speaks about how getting outside to walk helped her overcome grief when living alone in L.A, why her weight didn’t ever impact her confidence on red carpets and how her PCOS diagnosis finally lead her to start looking after herself. Plus, she she shares some of her favourite tunes along the way.

Inspiration is the first step

Speaking about why what inspired her ‘Year of Health’ Rebel was surprisingly candid, admitting she wasn’t in her best shape. She said “2020 was the year that I turned 40, and I was like, “Oh, my gosh…. I knew that deep down that I probably wasn’t the healthiest version of myself that I could be because I was putting work commitments in front of my health.

“I suffer from something called PCOS, which stands for polycystic ovarian syndrome. And basically it’s something that you’re born with. It’s genetic, and it kind of messes with your hormones and in my instance kind of made it harder than an average person would have the battle to lose weight.

“It’s weird cause I was always, like, a confident person. So I was always very confident in, like, my skills and abilities. And for most of my adult life, I was a size 16 to 18, which is kind of like, the average size of an American woman. And I felt very confident rocking red carpets and stuff because I don’t think, like, beauty is about size or anything. So I’ve always been, like, quite confident. I don’t think weight matters.”

And how did she kick it off? Well, Rebel went all in! She explains, saying “in the lead-up to 2020, I went to this Austrian health retreat. And it’s in this little town in Austria called Altaussee. There’s a very beautiful lake with these kind of magical rocks all around it…. And they do all these amazing, high-tech tests on you and cool treatments to basically give your whole system a… a restart.”

But the most surprising thing that despite all the technology and science available to her, the one thing the doctors prescribed turned out to be refreshingly low-tech. Rebel recounts, saying “You know at one point, they have all these electrodes attached to me and doing all this body analysis. And then I had to, like, run on the treadmill with this mask on my face. And then the Austrian doctor said to me, “Rebel, the best way for you to lose unwanted body fat is just simply walking. Doesn’t have to be high-intensity, doesn’t have to be uphill, just moderate walking an hour a day. And if you can do that, for you, for your body type, it’s, like, the best way to lose unwanted body fat.”

“And what was so interesting is that, like, you come to this amazing place that has all the best high-tech stuff in the world for health, and then the thing that they recommend is something that you could do anywhere in the world, and you don’t have to have anything to be able to do it apart from the ability just to go for a walk.”

There’s comfort in simplicity

“So I found that really comforting because it was, like, a simple solution to something that I thought a lot about before because I always thought, “Oh gosh,” like, I would train at the gym, you know even when I was at my heaviest, like hardcore and do weights and do things where you just feel absolutely exhausted afterwards, and I didn’t actually need to be doing that.”

“And, so 2020, I’d lost weight but very, very gradually, and sometimes I kicked up things a notch with some workouts and went hard, but the majority of the work for the year was just doing things like walking for an hour and just getting out there every day. I would normally have Sundays off as a rest day, but just doing that and then not feeling bad about it.”

Consistency trumps intensity

A lot of people… beat themselves up, and they think they’ve got to be really strict or stringent on some kind of diet or exercise plan. And I think sometimes just the simplest thing like getting out and walking for an hour a day is just the kindest thing to your body, and then your body will respond to that because, I mean I think a lot of us have made the mistake of like, “I want to fit into that dress for a wedding,” or something. And then they’ve gone and run five miles in a day and then can’t walk the next day. And then that doesn’t help anybody.”

“And so it’s just the consistency of getting up every day and doing something you can do to try to become a healthier version of yourself.”
