When it comes to running, Sam Wood is all of us

Sam Wood has ‘off’ days just like the rests of us. Here, the celebrity PT shares the handy hints he uses to get himself out the door when he ~really~ doesn’t feel like going for a run.

When it comes to getting out the door for a run it’s comforting to know that even one of the country’s most in-demand personal trainers struggles for motivation, too.

Sam Wood might look like he bounds out of bed, slips into his trainers and bounds out the door for a run – but even he finds it tough to get going. Proving he’s just like the rest of us trying to stick to a new running regime.

For Sam, it’s all about a sneaky Jedi mind trick to ease his body (and mind) into the run. He says “My rule of thumb is make your first kilometre the slowest. Don’t go too hard, too early; give your body and lungs a chance to warm into it. Start slow, and help your body adjust.”

And once you get going, it’s all down hill. “Start and you’ll never want to stop. It’s all about listening to your body and giving it the support it needs, which also includes making sure you make time to cool down and let your body recover.”

The fact that running doesn’t come easily to the 28 by Sam Wood founder is comforting, perhaps more so given he doesn’t see himself as a runner – let alone a ‘good’ one.

Like so many of us, Sam’s earliest recollections of running have cut deep, he recalls “I have those harrowing memories of school cross country. Particularly in Tassie where it’s freezing. Naturally, I’m not a good runner…But I’ve enjoyed it as I’ve gotten older given you don’t need anything to start.”

And what does his running routine look like now?

“I like to do two runs per week, one long slow run with Hendo my dog which is about getting outside, fresh air and Vitamin D, plus an escape. I love how I feel after.

Then interval running work – hills, stairs or at a footy oval. Something to stretch the legs out and keep those fast twitch muscle fibres working as I get older.”

“I find taking supplements can make all the difference to these two weekly runs and workout routines. I’ve been using Blackmores Super Magnesium+ and it’s the best to keep my body moving as it supports muscle endurance.”
