These are the ingredients I use for my DIY Whole30 taco seasoning. I recommend using high-quality spices for the best flavor. The brands I use and recommend are Simply Organic and the Thrive Market Brand. Both can be purchased online at Thrive Market.

Chili powder – this is the foundation of taco seasoning.

Chiptole chili powder – this is my favorite spice to use when I want to add heat to taco seasoning. It also has a delicious smokey flavor. If you can’t find it, then use a small amount of cayenne pepper.

Ground cumin, ground coriander, oregano, onion powder, and garlic powder – this standard spice blend creates a well-balanced flavor to the taco seasoning. Authentic taco seasoning doesn’t use garlic or onion powder, but I think it adds to the taste. If you’re following the Keto diet, then leave the onion powder out.

Paprika – Basic paprika adds a mild note to the taco seasoning. It’s there more for color. For a smokey flavor, substitute Spanish paprika or Smokey Paprika.

Salt and pepper – This recipe is low in added salt but if you’re watching your sodium, then leave the salt out.

Cooking Tips

I use 2-3 tablespoons of taco seasoning per 1lb of ground meat. You can use more or less depending on the level of flavor and spice you want.

You can switch up the flavors by adding or removing spices. For a milder taco seasoning, reduce or leave out the chipotle chili powder if you want a smokey flavor substitute, Hungarian or Smokey Paprika. For a sweet note, add in a sweet paprika powder.

You can double or triple this taco seasoning recipe. If you use taco seasoning often, then make a big batch to keep in the pantry.

I use 8-ounce mason jars to store homemade spices. As long as they are airtight, you can use any container. You can also use an old glass spice jar; just make sure to label it correctly.
